Parenting comes with so, so many opportunities to teach our children lessons. And last night I had one of those opportunities, so I took it!
Remember those Merry Go Rounds we used to play on as kids on the playground? Do you also recall trying to jump on it while it was spinning? Remember wiping out? Yeah, me too!
So tonight my son, Vincent, tried just that and didn’t make the jump, so he tore his knee up a bit. Oh well, it happens! Of course there were tears and he blamed it on me, but I got him to shake it off. Tough Love was definitely needed here in this situation, because he was not hardly injured at all.
So we get home and he gets a band aid...
Me: Ummm why do you have a band aid? You are about to get in the shower.
V: Mom, it will stay on. I can wear these in the shower.
Me: Ummm that doesn’t make any sense! Why let it get wet and have it come off? Just wait until after your shower!
V: (Doesn’t listen) (Thinks he knows best) (Puts on band aid)
Fast forward about 30 minutes....
V: Dad! Can you get me a band aid?
Me: (Smiles to myself and takes him the band aid) So why do you need another band aid?
V: (Looks at me and holds out his hand)
Me: (I act as if giving it to him but don’t just yet) So I thought that band aid would stay on in the shower?
V: (Again, no reply)
Me: So what did we learn?
V: That you were right.
Me: Uh huh. Sometimes mom does know what she is talking about. Doesn’t she?
V: Yes. (Still reaching for band aid)
Me: I have how many more years of experience on you?
V: Ummm... a lot..
Me: Yeah, 30 years... Ya know sometimes you just need to listen to what I tell you, because I have a lot more experience in things like this than you do.(Gives band aid and walks out of the room)
And that right there is how I parent. The only way they will learn is to do things the hard way, but I always make it a point to show them that they should have listened to me in the first place.
Just how I roll in this thing we call Parenthood. :)
